  1. Here where the 4.4 million New Zealanders (Kiwis) populate over three-quarters of our population live in the North Island of New Zealand with one-third of the total living in Auckland. The other main cities of Wellington, Christchurch, and Hamilton are where the majority of the remaining kiwis may live.

Around the 15 - 1600’s before Christopher Columbus and the whole of Europe who was afraid they were going to plunge off the edge of the world, The Maori people voyaged thousands of mile across the undisclosed Pacific Ocean in their canoe boats and became the first settlers in New Zealand (Aotearoa - Land of the long white cloud). Even still today Maori Culture plays an important part in New Zealand Aotearoa.


Rugby is New Zealand's national sport Mateship on the Sporting Field
  1. In the two world wars, it was witnessed a lot of casualties happened, affecting mostly the New Zealand Male population. But with that being told it brings loyalty and friendship closer -Mateship-. Things like that are still seen here today on the sporting fields whether it’s Hockey/Ice Hockey, Volleyball or Rugby. In New Zealand Rugby Football is on top of the list for sporting entertainment and is the most popular sport in New Zealand, with the legendary All Blacks having an amazing series with The Lions with the last game a fifteen All draw. Though the sport has public school beginnings in England, in New Zealand rugby is definitely the strong-hold sport of a man.

    Kia ora Motu,

    Welcome to the Winter Learning Journey programme! We are thrilled that you have joined us. It is clear from your post that you set a high standard for your work. This post is excellent. It is informative and entertaining. I particularly like the pictures that you have added to illustrate each of the three facts.

    Speaking of facts, I found it interesting to read that the European explorers were frightened to venture down towards New Zealand because they thought that they might fall off the edge of the world. What a strange thought...

    Fortunately, the Maori were willing to take the risk and set out in their waka to explore the southern Pacific Ocean. They first arrived in New Zealand approximately 1000 years ago. It has been suggested that the first Maori person to land in New Zealand was named 'Kupe.' I wonder what he thought when he first landed on our shores. Do you think that he was excited to have discovered a new place? He was certainly very brave and adventurous!

    Speaking of adventure, I hope that you will enjoy the winter learning journey. It is a chance to explore the country and to learn as you go.
